Scunthorpe United 1 Ipswich Town 1: David Healey ends dry weather to save Roy Keane

David Healy"s first goal for more than a year salvaged a point on Tuesday night for draw specialists Ipswich at inhospitable Glanford Park.

Cliff Byrne"s close-range header, after the visitors had twice failed to clear a Martyn Woolford corner, looked to have put Scunthorpe on course for their first win over Ipswich in half a century.

But substitute Healy"s leveller 15 minutes from time earned a draw. The Northern Ireland striker has been making no impression in the top flight with Sunderland but Ipswich manager Roy Keane believes his loan signing can make a major difference to his side"s survival bid.

"You can say it"s a year but there are a few summer months thrown in there when he would have been sitting on a beach," said Keane, after Ipswich"s 16th stalemate in the league.

"David has been unfortunate not to score a few for Sunderland but once a goalscorer always a goalscorer.

"He has just come up a little bit short in terms of the Premier League but that is no insult."

Ipswich dominated the first half in driving sleet, but could not breach the Championship"s leakiest defence. Jon Walters" measured chip thudded back off the bar after clearing home goalkeeper Joe Murphy, who also kept out attempts from Daryl Murphy, Damien Delaney and Jack Colback.

Ipswich emerged after the interval for an elaborate warm-up drill - a policy designed to shed the sluggishness from their second-half displays.

The previous nine goals they had conceded were all scored in the second period. However, Scunthorpe hit the front after a period of pressure and were left to bemoan Healy"s smart finish.

Their players surrounded referee Andy Haines claiming an infringement in the build-up and boss Nigel Adkins said: "Some referees would have given it, but the goal stood and that"s life."

COMMENT by JEFF PESTRIDGE: Battered savers contingency wait for for a spectacle or new reside in No 10

For the past 13 years, Labour has trampled all over savers with its tax attack on pensions and its undermining of the habit of long-term savings.

Over the past year, the damage has been compounded by the Government"s desperate attempt to rescue the economy from a double-dip recession.

The result - record low interest rates - has wreaked havoc, especially among deposit savers who depend on the interest from their nest eggs to supplement their retirement income.

Savers

Finding a savings account to limit the damage of rising inflation has become much harder

Although a limited number of savings accounts continue to pay three per cent plus, they are the exception - and even these best-buys fail to pay sufficient interest to repair the damage of inflation, currently 3.7 per cent.

Most savings accounts are paying a paltry 0.1 per cent interest (before tax) while rates available under the tax-friendly shelter of a cash Isa are only marginally better, by virtue of the fact that interest is paid gross.

More...Find the best savings rates (thisismoney.co.uk)What next for savings rates? (thisismoney.co.uk)New blow for savers as Isa rates tumble to below inflation

Worryingly, despite the formation of savings pressure groups such as Save Our Savers (SOS), matters look as if they will get worse before they get better.

The base rate is stuck at 0.5 per cent and all the indications suggest it will stay there until the end of the year at the very least. So upward pressure on savings rates will be minimal.

Indeed, in the months ahead, savings rates could slip further as banks and building societies (especially) strive to improve their profit margins by widening the gap between savings and mortgage rates.

Manchester Building Society last week cut savings rates across the board by a minimum quarter of a percentage point, reducing gross rates on some accounts to 0.2 per cent. Others will surely follow.

Until the economy swings fully into recovery mode - or a more savings-friendly government is in power - people can do no more than scour the market to find the best deal on their hard-earned savings.

No set of savers has suffered under Labour more grotesquely than Equitable Life"s one million policyholders.

For the past ten years these savers, many of them now elderly, have waited patiently in the hope of receiving some compensation for the money they lost when Equitable teetered on the verge of collapse in 2000. And, sadly, some have long passed away.

Only radical financial surgery by the insurer"s management in the wake of the crisis saved Equitable from administration, but the price paid by policyholders in the form of cuts to their investments was heavy.

Honor Blackman

Former Bond girl Honor Blackman, who fell victim to Equitable, is leading a protest calling for Gorvernment pay-outs

Unfortunately, and scandalously, calls for compensation have been ignored. Despite numerous reports from parliamentary committees, MEPs and Parliamentary Ombudsman Ann Abraham - all recommending compensation in light of the failure of regulators and various government agencies to spot the problems at Equitable in the run-up to 2000 - not a penny has so far been paid.

The Government has simply sat on its hands and stalled all efforts to bring compensation any closer. Yet, frustratingly as far as frugal Labour is concerned, the Equitable issue will not go away.

Tory leader David Cameron last week put pressure on Labour when he said he would resolve the issue "very early on" - if a Conservative government comes to power at the next General Election.

On compensation, he said: "The Government has put it off and put it off and in a very sick way, I think, they"re waiting for people to die."

According to the formidable Equitable Life Members" Group (Emag), 15 Equitable investors are dying every day while waiting for justice.

Emag, aided by actress Honor Blackman, an Equitable victim, has now called on the Government to make payments on account to those worst hit by the fallout from Equitable - namely 44,000 with-profits annuitants, all in their 70s and 80s, who have seen their retirement income halved since 2000

Emag wants the Government to pay the equivalent of two years of pension - equating to an average 4,400 each - to these annuitants which would be deducted from any future compensation.

It is a smart idea that is likely to be picked up at Wednesday"s meeting of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Justice for Equitable Life policyholders.

Emag"s proposal should be seized on by a Government with more than one eye on an impending election. But given Labour"s lamentable treatment of Equitable policyholders, it will no doubt be ignored.

Weve had the book and movie right away the Atonement the opera

Atonement starring Keira Knightley and James McAvoy

Ben Hoyle, Arts Correspondent & , : {}

Atonement, Ian McEwans novel of love thwarted by class, fight and a comfortless misunderstanding, is to turn an opera. The writer and dual of his friends have started work on an instrumentation that they goal will send the success of his 2001 bestseller and the Oscar-winning movie to the stage.

McEwan pronounced that he eventually concluded to the plan multiform weeks ago carrying agonised for a month over either to plunge in to the difference himself.

He opted not to but will assistance to figure the instrumentation prior to handing over to the producer and censor Craig Raine to write the words. The composer Michael Berkeley, who presents the long-running Radio 3 show Private Passions, will write the music.

They have desirous plans. Its not a cover piece, thats for sure, McEwan said. You can do a little really big thespian things with this. If you were meditative of a large-scale show afterwards what springs to mind is 380,000 infantry on the beaches of Dunkirk [a key environment in the story]. That would be utterly a choir.

The writer concurred that there was firm to be a bit of a pang at saying alternative hands take a required sharp edged metal to his work, but he added: I dont have any qualms. Ive regularly been really lucky. If you select critical people to work with you will get the rewards.

Atonement was McEwans initial novel after he won the Booker Prize for Amsterdam. Time repository declared it as the most appropriate novel of the year and the 2007 movie instrumentation with Keira Knightley and James McAvoy (and a screenplay by Christopher Hampton rather than McEwan) was nominated for 7 Oscars, winning Best Original Score.

It straddles 60 years and mixed perspectives in relating the cursed love event of the elegant Cecilia Tallis and the splendid but socially defective Robbie Turner.

The main impression in the book is Cecilias younger sister Briony, who, elderly 13, creates a catastrophic inapplicable designation borne of possessiveness that destroys all of their lives.

Raine knows the 2001 novel really well, McEwan said, as he was one of the initial to review and feed behind on it when it was still in typescript form.

Berkeley is scored equally together to McEwans well read agent, Deborah Rogers, and he and the writer have been friends for thirty years. In 1982 they collaborated on a peacemaker oratorio, Or Shall We Die?, and dual years ago they wrote a small scale show together, For You, about a grievous composer/conductor and his hectic mnage a six.

That prolongation swayed an as nonetheless unclear German show residence to proceed Berkeley with the idea of bettering Atonement for a incomparable stage.

I pronounced let me go afar and speak to Ian, Berkeley said. The some-more I thought about it the some-more I thought that it had themes of emotional and thwarted love that would have it really operatic.

The love event in in between Bobby and Cecilia is at a distance, in letters and the mind. Thats something that song can do that no alternative art form can. You can have them on theatre together singing a duet whilst hes in France (fighting in the Second World War) and shes in a sanatorium in England (working as a nurse). You can go in to the minds of these dual people so that they can be concurrently articulating their thoughts to each other.

The main plea is to frame it down to something that is still really relocating but is some-more skeletal, that leaves room for the song to supplement an additional dimension.

When you do something similar to this you have to travel around the behind of it and see at it from a opposite angle. Craig is really penetrating on the story of the immature girl. He wants to see at it really most from her point of view.

Talks are being scored equally up at the impulse that would have it a co-producton in in between the German house, an English one and an American one, with a perspective to a premiere in 2013. After that McEwan and Berkeley have a long-held aspiration to write a musical.
